Services
VFB is a area wide service providing volunteer readers and shopping
assistance to people who are blind and visually impaired.
Examples of services volunteer readers will provide include:
Reading mail
Helping fill out job applications and other forms
Assisting with paying bills, writing checks, and balancing the
checkbook
Reading instructions on:
prescription medication bottles
household equipment
appliances
cleaning products
packaged foods
baby formula
Helping college students with assignments requiring library
research
Pleasure reading
Reading employment related materials
Examples of services shopping volunteers provide include:
Grocery shopping
Assisting the consumer to label grocery items
Gift shopping
Shopping for household appliances and furniture
Clothes shopping (only volunteers of the same sex)
Volunteers can work with consumers on a regularly scheduled (up to
two hours a week) or as-needed basis.
Volunteers are matched with consumers based primarily on
geographic proximity, times of availability, and common interests.
Before being asked to work with a consumer, all volunteers will be
screened and oriented.
Volunteers under the age of 18 must have consent from a parent or
guardian or be under the supervision of a high school community
service program.
Volunteers read for people in their homes, work places, nursing
homes, and public places such as local churches or community
libraries.
